The Akye are part of the large Akan group. They reside on the eastern coast of the Ivory Coast and number a bit under 60,000. The Akan are responsible for some of the most highly recognizable art forms in Africa such as the akua’ba doll the wooden seats of power and Kente cloth. The Akye in particular fashion standing and seated wooden figures known as alangua with bulbous arms and legs and geometrical hair styles. The scarifications are done with wooden or metal pegs and studding which is unique unto the Akye. The statues represent the forces of female fecundity and are used in rituals to make these forces work. The statue has metal studding on the face, torso and back and is sitting on a famed Ashanti seat. What makes this figure a great find is that the wooden arms are moveable; being able to swing back and forth in a typical doll or puppet like fashion. Our alangua is an aged, used selection. It has achieved a crack along the back of the head. This happened a long time ago when the statue was first made and was drying out. In no way does it detract from its beauty or value!
