The benefits are two fold. Such endeavors can bring attention to the talent of a craftsman that hopes to be commissioned for more prestigious work. Secondly, it enables ordinary villagers to enjoy the beauty of and show pride for, their rich artistic heritage. Also note that the detailed animal bone handle has humanistic qualities verses animalistic ones. Human forms are usually reseved for Bamoun royalty.
