Antique Tuareg Necklace

Tuareg settlements are found in the countries of Niger, Mali, Libya, Algeria and Burkina Faso. ‘Tuareg’ is an Arabic term meaning ‘abandoned by God’ but they call themselves ‘Imohag’, translated as ‘free men’. The Imohag are descendants of the Berber and are proud and fierce fighters. They also are known as the “Bleu” people for the bluish tint that their skin has obtained from the indigo dye that rubs off from their clothing. This ancient group of people has been credited for establishing and working treacherous trade routes across the great Saharan desert by caravan. This colorful group, though nomadic has a vibrant social culture that is steeped in tradition and a passion for crafting jewelry pieces that have garnered them worldwide acclaim. Their foreign trading partners enabled them to come into possession of items unique to their routes. Certain stones and beads that were deemed valuable and or attractive were often kept for personal fulfillment.

The necklace on display is a piece that is much, much older than most Tuareg items offered today. This necklace contains old African silver segments and a collection of semi precious stones and beads that were selected and fashioned decades ago. See the individual gems below.
