The symbol carved into the center of this stool is a "wisdom knot" or Nyansapo. The essence of the Nyansapo is this: "Only the wise can make the knot and only the wise can untie the knot." Traditionally the right to use certain seats was tightly controlled by the Akan (ancestors to the Ashanti) and the King was the only one to grant permission. Only the high chief could sit on this Osese wood stool, he was thought to have great wisdom and the understanding mind of how to govern his people.
