The BaKongo people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo are also known as the Wongo and Ba-Ndjembe. Their history and culture is deeply intertwined with the Kuba, Leele, Pende, Chokwe and Mbuun tribes. They consider themselves unified with the Kuba and Leele people. BaKongo art as with their culture, is very similar to their neighbors. They produce excellent textiles and a diverse group of utilitarian objects such as pipes, drums, small mask pendants, combs, knives and ceremonial cups. The pipes on display have been innovatively constructed from gourd, clay, copper braiding, copper studs and animal bone. These pipes are used by individuals during special occasions. They are functional but their use should be reserved for decorative purposes.
