Grand embellishments, lavish ornamentations and highly detailed figurative carvings had to be as beautiful as possible; for their charge encompassed visually preserving tribal lore and history, aggrandizing the owners' social standing, paying tribute and giving honor to ancestors and royalty. When an artist is commissioned to create a piece for a king, oft time a masterpiece is born. Such is the case with this selection. Crafted for the sole purpose of supplying the Bamoun king and queen mother of Cameroon, vessels from which to drink, while in the company of others. When used, the unusual conformity of the horn would hide the mouths of the royal couple; so a person couldn't see how they drink. Fashioned from genuine buffalo horn (buffalo being a symbol of force) the horns feature stylized etchings of the king and queen mother, the classic Bamoun spider motif, symbolic of divinatory knowledge and the tranquil prosperous lizard of Bamoun lore.
