In the country of Cameroon, objects that feature a rosette design, a cross, “X” or a six or eight star-like pattern is a visual compliment to the earth spider, the symbol of divine knowledge. The spider ‘heteroscodra crassipes’ plays a crucial role in solving problems that a Bamileke village might face. This creature is used in a process called ‘spider divination.’ Because it lives underground, the earth spider is viewed as a link between this world and that of the ancestors. During this ritual a bottomless and topless container is placed to surround an earth spiders hole. Palm leaf chips, marked with special symbols are then positioned to cover the opening (see photo below). When the spider exits, the chips are moved and examined by the spider. After this is done the village diviner interprets the chips (signs) by their positioning and informs the king of his findings. Stools with this motif are reserved for the king because he is thought to be the very embodiment of wisdom. The king is also the greatest representation of tribal wealth. In Africa, artistic expression of prosperity can be inferred in many ways but few as appealing as this. Lacing around the rim of the top seating portion, imbedded cowry shells have been positioned in the consistent star-like, spider pattern (cowry shells are one of the oldest forms of African currency.) 63 genuine French Francs dating from 1920 to 1938 adorns the center portion. Thusly creating a balance between old wealth and new. An attractive glossy finish of a wood ash mixture has been applied to the seating area.
