One of the happiest and busiest occasions for celebration in an African village is when the king and his entourage pay a visit. The village comes alive for there is much preparation to be done and everybody joins in. The men hunt and or fish and prepare the grounds while the women and children gather baskets upon baskets of the grains and fruits that will be used during the feast. Our wooden and bronze display is a commemorative of this preparation. Circular scenes figuratively depict several women bustling about, carrying bowls and baskets of food to and fro the cooking area. All of this is done while under the watchful eyes of the men, as shown by the twelve bronze cast figures that are positioned around the perimeter of the door. The central highlight, the lion head, is extremely well done featuring an expressive bold face and bristling pronounce whiskers. The lion head is surrounded by twelve bronze cast elders all positioned in a segmented circle of bronze. Several Bamoun royal motifs that are used in exclusive reference to the king are carved along the sides of the display. Our display from Cameroon is an exceptional, cleaver and beautiful piece.
