One of the best known Ibo cult carvings is the Ikenga. The word Ikenga translates to mean “place of strength.” The artistic styling and sizes of the Ikenga varies greatly. The Western Ibo have increased the size to that of a stool. Others have added a head and others still are composed of an entire figure. Some figures were standing while others stood. The most common motif denominator found between the diverse offerings are 2 curved horns that protrude upwards, symbolizing power and strength. To the Ibo, the Ikenga statue possess a protective spirit; one that provides for worldly success and achievement. The Ikenga presented here is usually purchased by a young people who are moving into their first dwelling. It is considered to be a house protection fetish. The Ikenga is also consulted before under taking a new venture, before going hunting or before going on a long journey. It is deemed to be a state of good fortune. Some of the smallest versions were carried in pocket side. Most selections of this nature in Africa were usually carved by a professional and then consecrated by the village “nganga” or diviner to gain power before use. The Ikenga objects in contrast were procured in a regular market place and empowered by the owner himself. Offerings of kola nuts and palm wine were commonplace but not limited to. Our Ikenga received libations and the added personalized touch of fabric, much like a person would dress a favorite doll. This selection is aged.
