The Basenji, an ancient breed of dog is found in several African countries. The Congo, Zaire, Gabon, Gambia, The Ivory Coast, Ethiopia, Liberia, Sierra Leone and The Sudan are all home to the Basenji. Commonly referred to as “the dog that doesn’t bark,” the Basenji has performed hunting, flushing and pointing duties since the time of the Pharaohs of Egypt. Though not mute, African Basenjis are often outfitted with either a collar bell, that is worn around the neck or an underbelly bell which is strapped underneath the stomach of the dog. The bell serves to aid the owner in locating the 17 inch tall hunter. Both varieties of metal bells are offered here. All were hand crafted in Africa during the mid-twentieth century, all were used and the metal shows obvious signs of wear. The bells are functional though the jingling is low in sound and pitch.
