The Basenji, an ancient breed of dog is found in several African countries. The Congo, Zaire, Gabon, Gambia, Ivory Coast, Ethiopia, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Sudan are all home to the Basenji. Commonly referred to as “the dog that doesn’t bark,” the Basenji has performed hunting, flushing and pointing duties since the time of the Pharaohs of Egypt. Though not mute, African Basenjis are often outfitted with a collar bell, that is worn around the neck. The bell serves to aid the owner in locating the 17 inch tall hunter. The bell is hand crafted in Africa and is functional. The metal ball inside the case produces a heavy metallic rattling sound when moved.
