BaSongye Shield ll

The BaSongye of Southeast Zaire have local rulers, the Sultani Ya and an influential secret society, the Bwadi Bwa Kifwebe. The most famous mask created by the Songye, the Kifwebe, is worn in connection with the secret society. The mask can be either male if a top head crest is present or if displaying a plain coiffure, female. The shield offered here has a female mask as its central motif which is surrounded by Songye signature linear etchings highlighted by red and green pigment.

Female masks essentially reflect positive forces and appear in dances held at night such as lunar ceremonies. The mask has the powerful capacity to heal by means of the supernatural force that is thought to be housed in the mask itself. Such a shield would be designated for special ceremonial activity. In this case the shield was actually used and shows a few signs of wear on the front and along the edges. The back of the shield also displays decorative detailing which symbolizes the importance of the shield and gives light to the skill of the carver. The center hand grip is steadfast and sturdy.
