BaLuba Female Spirit Prayer Figure

This tiny figure represents the Luba female ancestor which brings to mind the origin of the Luba people. It is a story in which a female villager of common means named Cimbale Banda came to power. She was a keeper of supernatural power, unified various clans and strengthened the cohesiveness of the Luba empire. Even though this feminine power was later replaced by a masculine entity, women retain primary roles in Luba sociopolitical and religious systems. This reveals why female figures at one time dominated Luba sculpture. The figure on display is carved from a light wood, has telltale Luba features such as a cascading hairdo, an elongated oval face, coffee bean like eyes, triangular nose and diamond shaped scarifications on the belly. The protruding abdomen and evident breasts reinforce the femininity of the piece and meld together the positive forces of fertility. Fertility, reproduction and the bringing of life over death are primary aspects of the perceived spirit within all Luba women. The Luba appeal to this female spiritual entity when they need aid, protection, peace or security. This small figure was a very personal item and kept in private place reserved for spiritual practice and prayer. The selection is correctly worn in places from age and actual use.
