In 1975 the country of Dahomey changed its name to Benin. Benin is said to have been founded by Ife rulers. Bini lore has it that a great craftsman named Igueghae from Ife brought the bronze casting technology to Benin in the late 14th century. The Bini went on to develop a highly stylized form of bronze art in comparison to the more naturalistic Ife form. Benin metal workers are world famous for their workmanship in bronze. Such careful detailing has been maintained throughout each piece. The elaborate headdresses sported by these trusted chiefs of the kings' court, stem from the Ife belief that the head is the center of life. These pieces are excellent for persons who are new to collecting bronze art.
