African Bronze: The word Yoruba describes both a language and a group of people spread across Nigeria and Benin. Yoruba origins can be traced back to the holy city of Ife at the end of the first millennium. According to the Yoruba peoples’ myth of the origin of Ife it was the place where the gods descended from the skies to populate the world. The Yoruba of Ife are renown artisans; creating a vast selection of objects in various mediums. They are most noted for their metal works. In fact they have been accredited as the founders of the famous “lost wax casting technique” which enables cast works to be eggshell thin. Their most outstanding classic works above all are the “Ife royal heads” which were first designed in terra cotta then brass and copper then finally at peak, bronze. Traditionally smaller in size the circular holes located around the base of the neck allowed the heads to attach to wooden poles that were carried during a secondary funeral procession for kings and dignitaries. Our oversized, traditionally striated, naturalistically featured portrait bronze head has been hand selected for its excellent craftsmanship and will serve as a perfect centerpiece. Objects of this special order, have been highly prized by Western collectors for decades.
