Music is an integral part of African culture. Africans from all points of the continent utilize various instruments to communicate, to perform dance rhythms, as a compliment to the recount of historical events, doctrine and tales. Talented musicians are held in high esteem and usually cheerfully received. The Fang are a dynamic race with a noble past and deep rooted religio-magical beliefs. Their ideologies are upheld and transferred into visual form when artisans create statues, funerary objects, ritualistic paraphernalia and instruments. The harp is used by tribes such as the Mangbetu, Chokwe and the Fang, though the construction technique varies. The back of the Fang harp displays the carved head of an ancestor. The eyes are pierced and are encircled by lightened rings that give reference to the spirit world. It is thought that the ancestors wisdom and knowledge and when appropriate, unearthly message flows from the instrument into the soul of the musician who in turn plays and relays this musical information to the audience. The ancestor figure also serves to protect the player. Four thin metal strings are attached to four curved branches that extend from the back of the harp. The top part of the harp and the branches are held together by a strong native fiber. This harp has been used, can still be played but is basically an antique and was made in the mid twentieth century. It is an excellent collectors piece.
