Cameroon Shield

African Shields

African shields are among the earliest objects coveted by private collectors and to subsequently enter into the collections of ethnographic museums. Their artistic significance has long been overlooked in favor of seating, masks and figural sculpture. African shields serve in multiple capacities as defensive weaponry in warfare, emblems of status and rank, and accessories in dance performances. Shields were originally designed to offer protection during combat against man and beast. Their diverse forms developed in response to the different hostile situations. The size, shape and material of the shield was often determined by its specific use in battle. Large, weighty shields provided more substantial bodily protection during ground battles. Wicker, a lightweight material that is easily worked, allows for different weaving techniques to be implemented thusly creating more versatility in the creation of the form. The massive shield on display, from the country of Cameroon, offers the tribesman, full body protection while in a squatting position. It's tight weaving can not be easily pierced and the medium weight construction allows for quick maneuverability during combat. The natural light coloration provides excellent camouflage while in tall grass. This type of shield was primarily used on lion hunts. The shield is in good condition, not readily found and coveted by collectors of fine African weaponry.
