Canes are used in Africa mainly to assist a person in walking and it oft times gives a person a chance to show off their tribal status. An individuals’ position can be exhibited by the motifs that decorate his personal objects.Certain animals that are thought to have very special attributes have been designated as ‘royal’ animals for only members of the tribal hierarchy could share such traits. Their motifs are symbols of greatness and extreme power. Each walking stick on display has been carved from one single piece of native hardwood and carries the motif of a royal animal. A lion, elephant, antelope and lizards are all featured and beautifully detailed. A large king figure has been interspersed between. This type of cane was most likely given as a gift to a highly respect an royal elder.

The cane on the left contains two types of antelopes, a king figure and lizards.

The center cane features a lion, a large king figure and lizards.

The right cane diplays an elephant, a king figure and an antelope.
