The Chokwe people are members of a large culture cluster living today in central Angola, parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo and in Zambia. The male Chokwe mask, the Chihongo, brings prosperity, his female counterpart, Pwo, is the archetype of womanhood, an ancestral female personage who encourages fertility. As an ancestor, she is envisioned as an elderly woman. The eyes are closed to narrow slits and evoke those of a deceased person. The facial decoration, the scarifications, is thought to be female. Since resent Pwo became known as Mwana Pwo, meaning young women, representing young Chokwe women who have undergone initiation and are ready for marriage. This selection features extensive raffia braiding and flame red cloth fabric hair highlights.
The black metal stand is included.
