As far back as 1400 A.D. lumps of copper, later refined into "X" and "H" shaped crosses were used as currency in the Congo. Various sizes were cast with the most popular being about 9 inches across. Smaller versions grew in popularity as demand rose. The valued metal crosses were used as tender throughout central Africa. In certain parts of the Congo this practice is still accepted with a variety of metals used. Both copper "X" styled crosses on display are well worn from age.
