African tapestries, paintings, batiks, reliefs and carvings often depict familiar village scenes. No matter if it’s woven, pounded, etched or painted, the African artist will use various mediums to portray animals, surrounding plant life, important land formations, tribal symbols and kinsmen to help relate everyday village life to the on looker. The Mali artist in this case utilized a copper plate and skillfully pounded this well detailed scene of a weary male villager carrying a patterned basket that appears to be heavy. With his walking stick in hand we can determine that he has a long journey ahead!
