Product Description

" Handwoven cloth is sometimes regarded as having a spiritual potential not found in manufactured fabric."

The handmaking skills required to create such high quality fabric has been passed down from one generation to the next for at least 700 years. Indigo production being one of the oldest industries in existence is found all across Africa with each people developing their own distinctive process and design. The traditional practice of gathering leaves, flowers and stems from the indigofera or lonchocarpus cyanescens plants are still used and ground together to make a pulp. The pulp is left in the sun for 2-3 days to dry. This serves as the base.

In Mali among the Dogon, men and women have clearly defined jobs when it comes to the production of cloth. The ladies purchase the cotton with money they earned from cultivating the fields. The cotton is then spun into thread exclusively by women. The thread is the given to the weavers who are always by tradition male. The women dictate the size of the cloth to be made and also decided if the fabric will be sewn, dyed or sold as is!

Beautiful blue indigo cloth detailed with motifs in natural white. This stand out indigo cloth was produced in the African country of Mali by seasoned weavers. As with vintage cloth of this nature, small rips, small stains, loose stitching might appear on the cloth. This cloth is in good condition!!
