Artistically, the Dogon people of Mali have received much notoriety for important tribal works such as Dogon Ladders, Granary Doors and masks. As with the more well known Dogon selections, jewelry also plays a pertinent role in Dogon life. To acquire a necklace such as the one on display, the Dogon member would have to be a person of means. To wear one was a sign of prestige and endowed the owner with a heightened sense of self pride. The four solid metal beads and silvery metal adornments are made from a substance called “island dust.” This precious silver-like power which is found underground must be searched for, dug up, refined, carefully shaped then hand polished. The wooden balls and cylindrical forms all have inlays of island dust. All but two of them have tiny copper, brass and island dust geometrical shapes embedded into them. This is a pronounce, strong necklace that can be worn by men and women alike. This is a very nice pice that is not often found.
