The Dogon legend of creation decrees that the first human beings to come unto the world were twins. Following suit with that philosophy, twins born among the Dogon are believed to possess significant qualities of powers and energy known as 'nyama.' This nyama is what makes all life possible. Twins born into a family constitute a blessing, a harbinger of abundance, fertility and continued existence. The sculpture offered is made from a native hard wood and carved with open work styling. The figures are stacked vertically with one piggy-back upon the other. This special configuration represents the phenomenon of twins conceived spiritually and in our earthly realm. As an earthly beings the figure portrays very practical aspects of twinning. Although twins are individual beings, they are forever connected through the fact of a single birth, giving them a single identity. Each at times through out his life will carry the other. This serves as a lesson and a metaphor not only for the twins but for the entire extended family and village. Our statue left basically unprotected, exhibits age and has a section of the right foot missing from exposure. This in no way detracts from the value or beauty of this object. A well formed black solid wood base that presents the figures in an eye-catching stance is included.
