This figure represents an Ekpe masquerader from the Cross River Area of South East Nigeria. Ekpe is a secret society whose beliefs were based on the invocation of the leopard spirit.
All Efiks share allegiance to the Ekpe society and there are Ekpe shrines in most Efik villages. It is a graded society, each grade with its own masquerade costume. Only Efik and Ibibio men are allowed to wear the elaborate masquerade costumes. Members of the Ekpe society use a complex system of pictograms known as Nsibidi in their carefully guarded rituals.
The figure is demonstrating an Nsibidi pose with the aid of its staff. Miniature reproductions such as this one, of full masquerade figures are made in Akwa Ibam state. Nigerian members of the Ekpe society ofttime display them in their homes.
Composed of wood, wire, cotton and board this beautiful figure stands over 11 inches tall. Dolls will vary slightly.
