The Fang people occupy regions in Cameroon, Guinea and northern Gabon. Historically they were one of the most feared groups of people in all of Africa. They were known as ruthless warriors and practitioners of powerful magic. The Fang were one of the last people to be overtaken by the invading colonist. The Ngontang Mask played a huge judiciary role in important Fang ceremonies. This special wooden mask, whitened by kaolin (a pigment though to conduct spiritual power) was able to root out and fight sorcery. Placed on top of the wearers head in full costume, it was ever watchful being multi faced and could see evil supernatural forces from all sides. Our mask has been used briefly in ceremony, has incurred slight damage from such usage and was repaired in the village.
