| The Fanti occupy a flat plains region in Ghana which lies along the coast of the Gulf Guinea. They are a Twi speaking people and neighbor with the Ashanti, Bono and Ewe. The Fanti are recognized craftsmen gaining prominence for their signature rectangular shaped head a’kua ba dolls. The large wooden mask on display features brass and tin metal sheeting with tribal decorative etchings and copper braiding. A pronounce blackened hairdo tops the mask off. | The Dagomba are a large powerful ethnic group that live in the northern part of Ghana. Their villages are small giving way to expansive farms. The Dagomba live in dome shaped huts with the chiefs quarters located at the very center standing alone. Drummers play a very important role in Dagomba society. They are not merely musicians rather they are held in high esteem for being historians. They are responsible for learning and recounting the history of the Dagomba people. This vocation is passed down from father to son and basically stays within one family line. Our stained hard wood plaque depicts one such player.
