

The country of Ghana is a well known and favored travel destination for many citizens of the world. English is the primary language although there are over 50 major languages and hundreds of various dialects spoken. The legendary Ashanti are the ancestors of the majority of Ghananians. Customs are passed on through the generations and emphasis is placed on communal values. Children are still named for the day of the week they were born and the importance of dignity and proper social conduct is paramount.
When one travels to Ghana it is quite apparent that the country is awash with craftsmen and flooded with art! Dizzying amounts of masks, statuary, fabrics, drums, baskets and other tribal fair are offered at every turn. The people of Ghana are expert craftsmen and are proud of their ancestry and traditional art. They are expert at transforming age old important traditions into modern well accepted functional art!
A prime example of this Ghanian craftsmanship are the leather and goat skin mats offered here. These mats are handcrafted in every regard just like in the past. Precise sections have been hand measured without conventional instruments and hand cut and hand sewn into place to form beautiful geometrical patterns.
