Each goldweight was purchased in 1979 and were at least 20 years old at that time. The regular price reflects the current market value. The on sale price reflects the generosity of the Calfayans. There were basically two variations of shields used; the hide shield made from thick hide that was carried into battle and the dance shields of wicker and raffia. Neither are really seen today. Goldweights were often fashioned after them and their many different patterns and decorations illustrate the enormous variety. The meanings of the symbolic abstract geometrical patterns such as squares and triangles and spirals have been lost over time. Our example is a perfect display of a very well cast shield.
