Goldweight: Ashanti Shield

We are pleased to bring you from the renown collector and African art dealer Ladislas Segy, founder of the world famous Segy Gallery in New York, a collection of authentic Ashanti goldweights. Mr. Segy is author of such noted African art reference books as "African Sculpture Speaks and The Masks of Black Africa".

This offering is sponsered by Mr.& Mrs. Paul Calfayan. Each goldweight was purchased in 1979 and were at least 20 years old at that time. The regular price reflects the current market value. The on sale price reflects the generosity of the Calfayans. Authentication papers are included with each purchase, enjoy!

There were basically two variations of shields used; the hide shield made from thick hide that was carried into battle and the dance shields of wicker and raffia. Neither are really seen today. Goldweights were often fashioned after them and their many different patterns and decorations illustrate the enormous variety. The meanings of the symbolic abstract geometrical patterns such as squares and triangles and spirals have been lost over time. Our example is a perfect display of a very well cast shield. It is in superb condition.
