Mr. Segy is author of such noted African art reference books as "African Sculpture Speaks and The Masks of Black Africa."
This offering is sponsered by Mr.& Mrs. Paul Calfayan. Each goldweight was purchased in 1979 and were at least 20 years old at that time. The regular price reflects the current market value. The on sale price reflects the generosity of the Calfayans. Authentication papers are included with each purchase, enjoy!
Traditionally, each ruling chief owned a sacred stool. This most important Ashanti object was the principle symbol of the spiritual unity and life force of the Ashanti state. It was also thought to contain the states' "sunsum" or soul. Only a chief could own one and only a chief could touch or sit down on one. Upon the chiefs death it was blackened and kept blood soaked by sacrifices. This in turn kept it vitally forceful. The stools in time were styled in many variations. The offered weight features a center post and curved seating area.
