We are pleased to bring you from the renown collector and African art dealer Ladislas Segy, founder of the world famous Segy Gallery in New York, a collection of authentic Ashanti goldweights. Mr. Segy is author of such noted African art reference books as "African Sculpture Speaks and The Masks of Black Africa".
This offering is sponsered by Mr.& Mrs. Paul Calfayan. Each goldweight was purchased in 1979 and were at least 20 years old at that time. The regular price reflects the current market value. The on sale price reflects the generosity of the Calfayans. Authentication papers are included with each purchase, enjoy!
This goldweight features the fabled Sankofa bird perched upon a pyramid structure. Whenever a figure or object is placed upon a pyramid it implies that it is a symbol of great importance. The Sankofa is a popular and well known Ashanti motif. The Sankofas' head is always turned backwards, thus "facing the past." The Sankofa represents the old African adage "Always remember the past for therein lies the future."
