Mr. Segy is author of such noted African art reference books as "African Sculpture Speaks and The Masks of Black Africa".
This offering is sponsered by Mr.& Mrs. Paul Calfayan. Each goldweight was purchased in 1979 and were at least 20 years old at that time. The regular price reflects the current market value. This well detailed goldweight displays the popular "crossed crocodiles" with a common stomach motif. It is symbolic of the Ashanti saying 'two crocodiles having a common stomach nevertheless fight over the food.' Meaning that members of the same family or village should cooperate rather than fight because their goals are the same.' The crocodile proverb is also featured in the design of Ashanti stools.
