African Walking Stick: Africans have a penchant for transforming common everyday items into works of art. The cane or walking stick as it is known in Africa, is used in a normal fashion to assist in walking. In Guinea, where the canes were crafted, the status or reputation of the canes' owner can be recognized by the degree of workmanship, intricacy of design and the adjoining symbolism that the cane features. Our canes feature a lion motif. The lion is one of a few animals that when portrayed in African art royalty is signified. The lion has long been associated with great power and leadership. The fine heads have been expertly carved and detailed. The closed mouth cane on the left is handsomely configured in light toned wood with varying attractive grain patterns, which have been secured together by pegs. The center selection has a twisting raised design that extends down from the top of the handle and past the mid section of the cane. The mouth is open exposing four large fangs! The stick on the right end has a shaft that has been crafted from ebony and mahogany wood and configured into a spiraling motif. The mouth is wide open. These canes are about ten years old and sturdy.
