Gwono Pe Tou Mask

This beautifully cast African bronze mask crested by the unique Gwono Pe Tou symbol of royalty. In the country of Cameroon outside of the palace you will see the symbol of the two headed snake. It is the emblem of the Bamoun kingdom. Inside the palace sits an object such as the one presented here. The item is a visual symbol of the kings rule and the attributes that he must possess to govern successfully. The two headed snake shows the two heads that the king must rule with. First he must rule with the knowledge that he has to give the people what they want in order for him to survive politically and secondly he must also know what they really need to survive and prosper, thusly the second head. The large spider symbol in the center denotes the "truth" factor. The king must be wise enough to discern the facts from all situations. He must see through what is on the surface and root out the underlying truth. The bells on this bronze selection are rung by the king after the he has a meeeting with his people and he approves of their mind set concerning the issues at hand.

The entire mask is very well crafted and ornately detailed. For more information and to view a full size Gwono Pe Tou please follow the link at the bottom of this page.
