Kenyan Bone Necklace: Medium

When we think of African art, statues and masks usually come to mind. However, since the earliest of times, Africans were skilled jewelers. They made a wide variety of necklaces, chokers, and countless other selections. A bevy of resources such as gold, silver, bronze, ivory, animal bone and semi/precious stones were used to craft these pieces. Some items were worn to show a off persons’ wealth and social status. Others symbolized sexual maturity. While others still, provided a person with a general sense of self and tribal pride. The necklace on display was hand crafted by the Maasai tribe of Kenya. The necklace consists of large hand cut animal bone pieces. The bone segments are deep rich brown with patterned, striated lighter shades of bone. This necklace is strung with a strong dried grass that is native to Kenya. These necklaces are worn by the Maasai; a very proud people who are conscientious of social appearances. This selection is very pronounce, and is worn by men and women alike. This is an excellent wardrobe accent addition. Design motifs may vary.
