The necklace pendant above is a stylized "hand" known as the Khomissar. It is worn by the Tuareg and Bella women of Eastern Mali. At the age of 17 a Tuareg girl receives a Tcherot and a Khomissar pendant from her mother. The design, crafted with a white tile like material represents the five fingers of the hand. It is a symbol of protection which offers a defense against the evil eye. Fear of the evil eye is common to all people of Berber origin. They combat this evil eye with triangular shapes. The tiles are placed on a wooden thick base, which has a leather backing and is suspended upon a beaded cord. 18 of the ebony beads have tiny metal concave caps on the top and bottom producing a beautiful striated effect! This special type of whitened khomissar pendant is not mass produced and is considered to be a serious spiritual object.
