Africans basically use three styles of masks; the type that covers the face, the kind that sits atop the head and lastly, the style featured here, the helmet mask that covers the entire face and head area. Crafted in Zaire, it represents the brother of Woot, the first man of Kuba ancestry. The figurative styling of this mask is unique unto the Kuba. The men, from leaves of the raffia palm first weave the headdress. Copper is then placed on different areas of the mask. Kuba women apply the decorative cowry shells, seeds, traditional beadwork patterns and hand woven material to the cask.
