African spear: The unique beauty of Congo region weaponry is undeniable. The items are so well formed, visually compelling and diverse that they are coveted by collectors as objects of art. The Congo Basin and Kuba Kingdom offers a myriad of iron war swords, wooden dance knives and advanced ceremonial spears. Spears lavished with distinctive symmetrical iron spearheads, well balanced decorated shafts and unusual spear end butts are hand forged by highly touted master iron workers. In fact the region between the upper and lower Congo is referred to as “land of the blacksmith kings.” Finely crafted spears, swords and knives are and owned only by royalty and earned by deserving, well respected noted warriors and hunters. Such selections are indicators of tribal status and a source of tremendous pride for the owner. The 88 inch tall Kuba spear on display was owned by a person of extremely great stature. The unusual spear was especially crafted for a noted warrior and paraded during special occasions. The elongated spearhead with two circular cut outs at the lower portion is of classic Kuba styling. The long balanced wooden shaft has been perfectly wrapped in a copper casing indicating great prestigue, tribal honor and wealth. This spear is not new! This spear was used. This is not a clean cut hot off the press made for tourist selection but it is in excellent condition. This selection is for a true fancier of African weaponry!
