The Congo Basin and Kuba Kingdom offers a myriad of iron war swords, wooden dance knives and advanced ceremonial spears. Spears lavished with distinctive symmetrical iron spearheads, well balanced decorated shafts and unusual spear end butts are hand forged by highly touted master iron workers. In fact the region between the upper and lower Congo is referred to as “land of the blacksmith kings.” Finely crafted spears, swords and knives are owned only by royalty and earned by deserving, well respected noted warriors and hunters. Such selections are indicators of tribal status and a source of tremendous pride for the owner. The Kuba spear on display is a well crafted section. The spear was carried daily by the owner who guarded the villages precious livestock. The Kuba tribesman needed this important weapon to fend off human rustlers and animal predators. The enormous elongated spearhead is beautifully symetrical and shows off classic Kuba styling. The balanced wooden shaft is covered with two different styling of metal wrappings; tightly coiled rings and thicker wider heavy strips that have held their form very well. Looseed coils adorn the lower portion of the shaft. The butt is iron and has a distinctive flared bottom so it will nestle securely in the earth. This spear is not new! This spear was crafted and used! This is not a clean cut hot off the press made for tourist selection. This selection is for a true fancier of African weaponry! The craftmanship adheres to tradition in every aspect. This selection was not manufactured for commercial trade; it is authentic and was used as a tool and a symbol of glory.
