Religious beliefs played a role in limiting the production of furniture in Africa. African spiritual credos dictate that all things natural belong to God and are therefore sacred. Trees, which are part of nature, are thusly to be worshipped and not just cut down to make a chest or a chair. Furnishings are created not for utilitarian reasons but with special purposes in mind; but because African craftsmanship is so elegant and exquisite and possess such a strong sculptural quality they resemble art more than furniture. Some collectors treat them as sculpture others as a beautiful resting place for bodies and various art objects. Our ten-year-old Looma tribe chair fits the mold perfectly. The selection is crafted from a hardwood and is an excellent accent piece.
