Batiks are produced in Kenya by brushing hot liquid wax onto a piece of cotton cloth in the desired pattern. The canvas is then dipped into a dye which adheres to all of the areas that are not covered by the wax. The wax is then removed and reapplied repeated for each color used. This is a tedious time consuming endeavor that yields exceptional art. Animals, village scenes, landscapes, seascapes and abstracts compose much of the subject matter. The colors are natural and brilliant!
The Maasai, despite being one of Africa’s most fabled peoples and cultural attraction, have held onto much of their traditional ways. Tourists are awed at the vertical leaping ability of the ‘morans’ (warriors) during tribal performances. This technique was first developed by hunters to intimidate lions who were in competition for the savannah and cattle herds. Young men and seasoned warriors will often practice this feat to show off and display their virility and fearlessness.
