Batiks are produced in Kenya by brushing hot liquid wax onto a piece of cotton cloth in the desired pattern. The canvas is then dipped into a dye which adheres to all of the areas that are not covered by the wax. The wax is then removed and reapplied repeated for each color used. This is a tedious time consuming endeavor that yields exceptional art. Animals, village scenes, landscapes, seascapes and abstracts compose much of the subject matter. The colors are natural and brilliant!
The underlying batik background has been enhanced by a hand painted scene. To the proud Maasai, personal apperance means everything! Hair is elaborately braided and dyed in a rich ochre tone from the clay of the soil around Mt. Kilimanjaro. The braiding can take weeks to complete and is done by men! This selection can be hung as is or framed.
