Maasai Batik: Before the Hunt

Batiks are produced in Kenya by brushing hot liquid wax onto a piece of cotton cloth in the desired pattern. The canvas is then dipped into a dye which adheres to all of the areas that are not covered by the wax. The wax is then removed and reapplied repeated for each color used. This is a tedious time consuming endeavor that yields exceptional art. Animals, village scenes, landscapes, seascapes and abstracts compose much of the subject matter. The colors are natural and brilliant!

The underlying batik background has been enhanced by a hand painted scene. For young Maasai men the dawn of the day is received with eager anticipation of a hunt. Energy levels are high and can barely be contained. With clubs and staffs in hand members mass together in the colorful dawn of a new hunt and a new chance to prove themselves. This selection can be hung as is or framed.
