Maasai Batik: Marketplace

Batiks are produced in Kenya by brushing hot liquid wax onto a piece of cotton cloth in the desired pattern. The canvas is then dipped into a dye which adheres to all of the areas that are not covered by the wax. The wax is then removed and reapplied repeated for each color used. This is a tedious time consuming endeavor that yields exceptional art. Animals, village scenes, landscapes, seascapes and abstracts compose much of the subject matter. The colors are natural and brilliant!

The underlying batik background has been enhanced by a hand painted scene. The Maasai, known as great hunters and herders have also taken to the market where many of their tribal products are offered for sale. Men, women and children all take part in the venture. This selection can be hung as is or framed.
