African spear: The use of African spears for militaristic purpose has been evident for centuries. That usage though, only scratches the surface of its total tribal-social significance. In the culture of the Maasai, tribe of the legendary warriors, the spear is used offensively and defensively; to serve and to protect. It is a tremendous source of tribal pride and persoanl prestige. Crafted in a wide variety of forms it functions in political, religious, ritual and ceremonial activities that are important to the entire village. The physical appearance of a Maasai spear can indicate the age-graded status of male youth (a series of complex initiations of which there are many levels to master) and the position of junior and trial elders who politically govern and defend the village. Each grade completed garners the graduate increased tribal respect and responsibility. Like the religio-magical fetishes of the Congo, Maasai spears are not complete without supernatural empowerment. Magical spells are cast, they are embellished with charms, symbolic design and have magical substances applied, all during special ritual ceremony with much pomp and circumstance. The Maasai ceremonial spears are used and carried by village elders during numerous tribal affairs. The spear head is shortened and heart-shaped and dressed in a leather thong for ceremony sake. The weapon is a three piece configuration of wood and metal. The spear head and the metal end of the butt are attached by hardened wax and socketing to the opposite ends of the third section, the wooden grip. The spear offered here is indicative of those used ceremonially today. The entire piece was hand crafted in Africa. This long selection is well balanced and exhibits expert metal working technique. The price is for one spear.
