The reliquary is an object that unites human remains; skulls and bones with a carved statuette. It was designed to act as a receptacle and dwelling place for the spirit of the dead. These reliquary provided a physical point of contact for the living to connect with the deceased and visa versa. The reliquary of the Mahongwe (also called Ossyeba) characteristically feature a snake-like face, fashioned from copper binding and brass wires. The statuette was to take on a non corporeal ghost like form. One that had rounded all seeing eyes and abstract nose and mouth. The ceremonial object on display features the classic Mahongwe reliquary snake-like face; incorporated onto the body of a hand held rattle. The elongated hand grip middle is composed of securely bound wood strips that extend downward and flares into the lower rattle section. The seed incased bottom housing has been carefully crafted with a beautiful natural fiber woven binding. This type of instrument is used during ceremonies associated with formal burial rituals.
