The Mambila are part of a wide collective of tribes that place their faith in a small statuary figure called a “fetish.” They are believed to provide individuals with protection and to ensure fertility among women. Unlike the majority of this collective, the Mambila, which means “people” in Fulani, their fetishes include hand, held versions. The word 'unusual' refers to the fact that most known fetishes are stationary objects that have been empowered by a fetishist, given to a ordinary villager, placed in a sacred place and passively activated by being paid daily homage. Our fetish was clearly designed to be hand held and physically used by the Nganga himself. This item suggests that it is directly and actively empowered by the supernatural forces that flow from the Nganga, into it. A selection such as this is considered extremely potent in insuring fertility and protection. The Mambila of Northern Cameroon of the past were fervent believers of otherworldly powers and occultist schemes. Renegade sorcerers were hunted and given poison orally to prove guilt or innocence or had their hearts pulled out to see if it had fibers, which proved guilt. Having the heir eat the liver of a relative passed on the high position of Nganga. The majority of objects obtained from the Mambila are of a statuary nature. The acquisition of this fetish is a find.
