Nile Monitor Lizard Bag

Monitors belong to the family Varanidae. Nile monitors are found throughout Africa except in the Northwest. They can grow to ten feet long tough most are half that size. They are active extremely fast lizards that may be very hostile. Their strong jaws can deliver an excruciating bite. Once they bite something it is very difficult to get them to let go. Monitors are carnivorous and will eat eggs and anything else they can overcome. Species which live in or near water will readily eat fish and can dive for up to one hour. It is very agile on land and in the water. They are active during the day.

In tribal ideology, the monitor lizard is placed in high esteem above the other animals. It is perceived to be powerful and bizarre for it travels on land and on water. This curious behavior is considered a virtue. The Yoruba people of Africa refer to this lizard as "awonrivon". Yoruba practitioners of medicines would often carry magical healing objects in lizard skin pouches. A hunting cult call "buyubwanga" meaning "the magic of the monitor lizard" was once practiced by the Tabwa, Luba and Mbote people. Monitor lizard skin is sought after today for drum heads. The vibration their thin skin produces when stretched over a drum top is second to none.

The bag closes by placing the two knotted leather balls through the braided loops with extending tassels that are attached to the face of the bag.
