The dolls held by young Namji women of Cameroon to ensure their fertility are considered to be among the finest and the most well designed dolls in all Africa. Crafted from a hard wood they are usually decorated heavily with colorful beads, leather strips, metal rings, coins, fiber and cowry shells; though the adornments can vary according to the usage of the doll and the taste of the owner. The older wooden Namji on display features the classic, and much sought after bent arm and leg form where all four appendages uniformly point downward. The subject body is of worn distressed wood. The head characteristically small in proportion to the body, has three red beads, two for the eyes and one placed for the mouth. The neck sports a fringe of leather strips at the front. The old remnants of a string, of extremely tiny yellow beads rests at the neck bottom. Leather attachments with finger like strips are featured at the bottom of each arm. The torso is entwined with a fitted fiber brace and a prominent, leather striped adornment. The waist is surrounded by a skirt of cotton strings. At the lower back portion of the dolls' legs are two worn and encrusted metal rings that served to hold the figure in place for the owner. The Namji is complete with a perfectly carved black wooden base for proper display purpose. This is a fine example of the classic Namji doll used for play and as a traditional fertility symbol.
