The dolls held by young Namji women of Cameroon to ensure their fertility are considered to be among the finest and the most well designed dolls in all Africa. Crafted from a hard wood they are usually decorated heavily with colorful beads, leather strips, metal rings, coins, fiber and cowry shells; though the adornment and basic configuration can vary according to the usage of the doll and the taste of the owner. On display is a clever selection whereas the traditional characteristics of a Namji doll have been incorporated onto a musical rattle. When gripped by the aged beaded waist and shaken the dangling cowry shells produce a rattling sound! The doll can be hand held or suspended from the owners clothing by the heavy metal ring that is attached to the head crest. Adorned with tiny red neck beads and two red beaded bracelets the doll is used during festive celebrations such as weddings. This item is solid and has a very smooth finish.
