African jewelry is as variegated as the African people themselves. Armed perhaps with the richest natural resources in the world; the African jeweler is constrained by only his imagination and in certain special cases by tribal tradition and superstition. Palm leaves, leather, eggshells, ivory, bronze, brass, silver, copper, gold, animal bones, glass, semi and precious stones were all utilized for aesthetic adornment purposes. Beaded necklaces served for some groups as a sign of tribal identification. For others, beads were a sign of wealth and power. Beads that were perceived to be valuable were heavily traded and used as currency. Let us not forget the factor of vanity, which also comes into play. In Nigeria and Guinea the coconut necklace is found. Handcrafted from coconut shell fragments, each piece is individually shaped and sized and strung. Natural coconut disc necklaces are becoming a bit harder to find due to the influx of the non traditional version wherein the disc sections are plastic, colorful and more easily manufactured.
